Elen was served a mixture of plants, bark, and alcohol before a deep massage, which localizes the fetus and presses it down to the cervix. The technique used as an abortion method in the region for centuries can lead to hemorrhage, perforation of the uterus, or death. The healer prays for the forgiveness and the survival of the patient every time before performing the massage. She had intense stomach pain and could not walk or urinate. In a hospital, she was treated after several hours of wait, only after admitting the self-induced abortion. When she woke up from anesthesia after a curettage, she was handcuffed to the bed, her husband was arrested, and policemen standing in the room handed her the fetus closed in a jar, saying, “Mother, this is your dead baby.” She had to borrow money to bribe the policeman to release her and her husband. A few years later, she got pregnant again, and at 20 weeks, learned that because of lack of fluids around the fetus, lungs could not properly develop. Despite this, it was illegal to terminate the pregnancy at this stage under Mississippi laws, and she had no resources to travel elsewhere. When her son, Hunter, was born, she looked at him, grasping for breath for 10 hours before he died. “I went home with his birth certificate and an empty box with a black flower. They did not let me hold his body. No one talked to me about milk that would develop in my breasts or the hormones that were telling me that I was a mom”. Her mentally ill mother is not present, and she has no contact with her father. She didn’t tell anyone about the pregnancy. When her aunt arrived at the hospital, she insulted and beat Elizabeth until being removed by members of the medical staff. Elizabeth later waited for 18 hours on the bed for an evacuation procedure, as her family members disputed who was going to pay for it. According to the law in Lagos, termination of a pregnancy that does not endanger the mother’s life or health is punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Krzysztof believes doctors put Marta’s life in danger by not giving them the option to terminate the pregnancy while the fetus’ heart was still beating. Despite being admitted to the hospital with "unavoidable miscarriage" and her water breaking in the 17th week of the pregnancy, Savita was refused pregnancy termination as the foetus’s heartbeat was still detectable. At the time, the country's constitution granted the same rights to the "unborn child" and the pregnant woman. Savita died of sepsis and cardiac arrest a few days later. The social outrage after her death led to national protests and the change of the law 6 years later. She had 4 abortions, 3 were done by a traditional nurse in a private house. All without anesthesia or post-abortion care. The fourth abortion was done with an injection and abortion pills provided by a different auxiliary nurse, who also provided her with a contraceptive implant, effective for 3 years. Mercy was 14 when she gave birth to Jennifer and brought her up as a single mother. Her daughter went to Lagos right after high school last year to help the family financially. Jenniffer’s body was driven during a 15-hour journey from Lagos to her home village in Cross River state. She was buried during a small nightly ceremony. Traditionally, a child who dies should be buried within 24 hours, but Jennifer’s family struggled to borrow money for hospital bills and transportation payments, which delayed the ceremony. Mercy died unexpectadly less then two months after her daughter's funeral. She orphaned three sons, aged 13, 5 and 3 years old. Andrzej Grajewski (73) shows how he used to play violin when he was younger. He lived alone since he lost his daughter and his partner in a car accident several years ago. Engineer, before retiring, he worked in management. However, most of his documents got lost from the public archives during the post-communist transformation period, and his retirement pension was only 270$ per month. As he said, due to stress-related to his financial condition, he developed severe health problems and spent eight months in hospital before the pandemic started. Grajewski passed away in February 2021. He was found in his bed by a volunteer taking care of him in the past months. Due to the lack of imminent family, he was buried weeks later in another part of Poland. Since, with the administrative help of some volunteers, her debts were canceled. She is now living only with social help, and most months, she has less than 400 PLN (around 100 $) to live on. She was firmly dependent on meals provided by social welfare before the centers closed in March 2020. He helps him with his chores, prepares him some meals or helps him do it on his own, brings him to visit the cemetery or sit in a park, but mainly comes to talk and spend time together, as due to severe loneliness, Wyzykowski had suicidal thoughts before he was approached by “PSIK” foundation which helps seniors in need. He fixed it all on his own, and now he is the only person living in the house during winter. All the other apartments are not heated, and his neighbors are spending winter with their families. Zygmunt lost his son years ago, and his beloved wife passed away almost three ago, after 37 years of their marriage. Rafał Witkowski (43), for three months already, has been spending several hours a day helping Henryk Stepien (77) to become more independent. After having his legs amputated, Henryk has been dependent on his wife's help for several years. The family could not even afford to buy nappies, let alone medicines or rehabilitation. Witkowski himself was paralyzed in his early youth. For three days that he spent alone in the forest, he has been only eating leaves. He was later caught by border guards, released, caught by the police and released again. Syller who lives right at the border of Bialowieza forest is the initiator of the initiative. As he says, these lights mark safe houses where migrants can knock, find help and shelter. In the Podlashie region strongly influenced by the governmental propaganda against migrants, they are also a sign to the community that there are people willing to help and that helping is not illegal. Katerina worked in LKAB for several years and resigned a few months ago, when the Per Geijer deposit of rare earth minerals was announced to have been discovered in the last remaining road for Gabna reindeers to move safely from their winter to summer grounds. She now works for Gabna Sami village, updating maps and statistics that prove the necessity of this land for her community, and effectively fight against LKAB for the rights of the land. The cabin that he is staying in has no electricity, despite being on the lands that were affected when the hydroelectric powerplant was built in the nearby National Park and hundreds of people were forced to move, including his grandparents. For many the supplementary job is the only way to continue in reindeer herding business. Mine provides unbeatably higher salaries and more flexible schedule than any other employment in the region. People often came for a week or a few days each month and during this time, work up to 20 hours a day.
